Statement
My work explores the current relationship between me and my cat, showing our connection and how we are two sides of the same coin. The imagery depicts how my cat and I, and sometimes my roommate, exist in various parts of my apartment. The space in the painting is typically exaggerated with harsh lines and weird proportions to help push the viewer to feel small or awkward in this setting. My paintings with my cat vary in feeling and can show us: waking up: sleeping together and being connected, not expecting anything from the other: looking for her under my bed and looking at me and my roommate, unsure of our intentions. My cat, Mira, is very shy and skittish. She doesn’t always want to be touched or seen by us; it can only happen on her terms. I feel very connected to her as I am shy as well and often would like to hide from the world. I know how hard it can be to break out from that fear mentality, and I want to show her connection to us despite her fear.
